I. Justice for Hotel Workers Campaign Kicked Off Publicly

A strong holler out in thanks to the 80 + people who braved a cold and rainy day last Friday, November 9th, in support of the Workers' Center filing of a Unfair Labor Practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board on behalf of ex-Hilton Garden Inn hotel employee, Michelle Lopez.

II. Two New Living Wage Businesses: Multicultural Resource Center and Ongweoweah Corporation

A strong holler out goes to the Multicultural Resource Center and the Ongweoweh Corporation (a pallet management company) for becoming our 46th and 47th Living Wage-Certified Employers! We encourage all employers that pay a Living Wage to consider applying for Certification.

To qualify/or apply to become a Living Wage , as definited by Alternatives Federal Credit Union and the Workers' Center, one must pay at least $9.83 to all employees; must offer health insurance to all employees averaging 30 or more hours/week (or pay $11.18/hr. if health insurance not provided; certain benefits can apply as 'deductibles' from the Living Wage figure (such as food, other essentials); certain workers' rights violations can disqualify an employer for certification even if pay a Living Wage. All the details and application can be found at http://www.tclivingwage.org/employer/index.php

By providing every employee a Living Wage, you show your integrity and leadership in the community. You create a positive image in the minds of current and potential customers. You strengthen relationships between staff members and management, and you raise employee morale and productivity and encourage employee loyalty.

III. Living Wage Calculator for Everywhere in Country!

Check out the Living Wage Calculator at the following website http://www.livingwage.geog.psu.edu/ that can be used to deduce what the Living Wage is for anywhere in the country. It doesn't estimate for savings and recreation as does the Alternatives Federal Credit Union does, but appears to be very legitimate otherwise.

IV. Consider Becoming a Financial Sustainer of the Workers' Center; Round Off at Alternatives in November Benefits Workers' Center

One very important reason that the Workers' Center is able to sustain its work is through donations from people such as yourself. Through our affiliation with Jobs with Justice, we are now able to offer those that can afford it to become a Sustaining Member of the Workers' Center on either a monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual basis (also one time donations). Please go to https://secure.ga6.org/08/tompkins_donate if you're able to help out!

For the month of November, Alternatives Federal Credit Union has made the Workers' Center its Round Off recipient (for those doing business with a teller). Please consider donating!
